Suddenly, yesterday, I heard a low tone (hum) even over the radio and other noise. Turned off radio, blower and idled. It came and went. A rather low hum that clearly came from the hatch when I opened it. I got stranded the last time my fuel pump failed, so I am motivated. I read many/most pumps that fail are likely pre-pumps and the main pump has a longer life. Also read in other Saab forums that the prepump generally is suspect before the main pump, although, nothing lasts forever. They all eventually fail.

Now, today when driving, it has a ratcheting sound, high frequency click. No hum.

I've got a 1988 Turbo 900 (second owner). Original fuel pump went at 220K and at that time it was an emergency so we replaced it with a used one. Now I'm at 300K, which is 80K later on the used pump.

Ordered the main Bosch OEM pump yesterday. Today I'm going to order the prepump, either a Delphi (FE0069) or AC Delco (6441336- new old stock).

1) Can someone tell me if a hum and ratcheting is probably the prepump? Or is it impossible to tell?

2) Also, which prepump is preferable, Delphi or AC Delco? Delphi went into bankruptcy about ten years ago and their products are now sourced from everywhere and I have been disappointed with their quality? Anyone have a recommendation based on fit, quality and their experience? I'm also concerned that I don't have the correct part numbers for the prepump.

I am determined to figure out which pump is making the noise, so I guess I will replace the prepump first and see how it goes. Hate to just throw away good parts.

In the meantime, it would be great to hear from those who went through this and have advice.

Mark
