I had to get a shop I trust to take off the original transmission drain plug. I tried a pipe wrench and even a vice grips but basically, it needed to be heated up slightly, have the broken-off 3/8 inch Craftsman socket extension removed, and then it came off.
I was surprised that 18mm x 1.5 pitch is quite common and found good ones even at Fleet Farm ($2.29) but it is not magnetic and came with no gasket.
I will reuse the magnetic one but I was advised to do two things in the future: make absolutely sure that there is no swarf or other debris on the threads (hard to do since it's magnetic...) and second, to use a little bit of anti-sieze on the threads.
Surprised to read on this forum how common this problem is. I guess it's the combination of swarf, oil and perhaps too tight of torque that does it.
