Voltage is dropping to the battery level because of the increased load to which the alternator cannot keep up. Resistance is part of the equation, but the least likely cause due to temperature change. The voltage regulator is a valid concern with flickering lights, but not the ground or power leads. The first component to consider is the brush pack.
