Funny thing about those C900 turbo oil coolers: They are lower than the sump BUT the hoses connect high up on the block at the filter adapter AND there is a valve that only opens and allows oil to flow when the oil reaches a certain temperature so you never really drain the cooler when you do a conventional oil change. When I get to where my Saab parts and books are (like 300 miles away) I can take some measurements for comparison but for now I still like the short dipstick tube theory.
