The horizontally oriented distributor cap is highly prone to water intrusion. Your symptoms can be a result of this, and highly likely, having occurred just after washing. It can idle fine with moisture for a bit, but will kill power under load.
The first step to diagnose an air mass meter is to look for the bright glowing hair-thin wire spanning the diameter of the air passage. This occurs a few seconds after shutting off the engine. Superheating the wire burns off any accumulated dust/soot. A weak (redish color) or no light indicates a bad meter right away.
