I might have a simple solution to your issue. I have 2- 5speed Convertible Saabs. 94 900S 110,000 miles, and a 91 Turbo 87,000 miles. The 94 seems to me extremely forgiving with shifts, the 91 was often giving me the same notchy 5th gear shift as you describe, especially after it warms up on the road. I chased all the usual suspects, shift adjustment, motor mounts etc. Finally took it to Saab mechanic. He drained replaced the 10-30w with Redline MTF, said nothing wrong with the car and we went for a test ride, him driving. I got in the car and bamm, same problem. Here's what I discovered to be the remedy. I was "puttying" it into 5th instead of letting the transmission shifter take it into 5th. Try this on 5th. Use the palm of you hand to tap it straight up to neutral, then do a quick, kind of slap side palm to the right and then up. I do it now instictively in a pretty quick motion. Seems that split second letting the shifter take it to neutral and then straight over and up is the ticket. Now it is habit and I now longer have the nervous fear of grinding something in the process. I know this may sound weird, but this absolutely solved my problem. I now. out of habit shift my 94 the same way. Try it and I would love to hear your results on this forum.
