Well... I broke the main fuel line today :/ Posted by 2nd Owner [Email] (#70) [Profile/Gallery] (more from 2nd Owner) on Fri, 23 Oct 2020 19:13:24 In Reply to: Re: Start with the tank....., Charles R Wirt [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 23 Oct 2020 18:28:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So overall things are in good shape in the engine bay // other than a few dry vacuum hoses things are intact and seem OK. CIS lines included seem in nice shape.
Back at the fuel tank is another story. It's got a lot going on. At first I was told the tank had been swapped. But I'm not so sure. Inside was the worse smelling gas ever. It was darker yellow than normal old gas and at the bottom was brown like the color of balsamic vinegar. The pump is a mid-80's pump I think (Bosch 0 580 254984) mated to the 1982 single pump set-up, but the bottom pickup part was missing and a generic strainer was there. Left in the car were three other pumps and the two stage black housing from later model 900's all of which don't work. Tempted to buy a new pump and not use this one even if it runs now during testing.
When removing the pump, the very first thing I did was break the line right by the banjo fitting so now I'd be about an inch and a half short if I cut it and re-pressed in that fitting. Trying to figure out how to deal with that. Also, when I was moving my hand inside the tank to pick up the white tray thing at the bottom that these early pumps sit in I snapped off the return line up at the top. It was actually the through fitting that broke off at its plastic barbs. Also, not sure how to remedy that. Might try to hose clamp a section of regular fuel hose on what's left there and run it down to its spot in the tray. I think but I'm not sure that the return pressure isn't as high.
Fixing the main line I would like to do that right // it's in an area on top of the tank where I would not want to be leaking gas and smelling it or dripping down onto the exhaust or something like that.
There is a guy on eBay selling I think three unknown part number oem saab fuel lines. The first might be the one for this car but I'm not sure just by looking at his pictures.
Tomorrow I am going to swap out the fuel distributor and mixture control unit, make a parts list of the hoses and bits for the next trip to town, and avoid the back of the car for a while.
Oh and the charcoal canister doesn't match the Bentley one, but I assume its just and early version for the '82 non-turbo... I hope.
