Sandy, As best I can tell the later pumps are not really an improvement, just a change. The older two-stage pumps had similar reliability, durability and performance. I suspect that the change had more to do with the fuel pump makers than with Saab. The newer pumps are secured to the tank with a large, plastic threaded lock ring while the older style were secured with a giant hose clamp around the rubber "funnel" that held the actual pump. Consequently the tank dictates which style pump can be installed. I never encountered or heard of an early fuel tank having cracked but it seems to be something that happens occasionally with the later style tanks.
