Hey Chris, Roger and Sandy,
Thanks for the information and the suggestions. I haven't dropped the transmission, and the shifter rod looked in pretty good shape before I installed it (no signs that I could see of it hitting the ground). I tried starting the car last night and letting the clutch out in fifth gear. The car does move a very slight amount, and the engine bogs down. The car moves maybe a few millimeters, but I can feel the slight movement. I tried all the other gears, and the car doesn't move at all. I actually tried letting the clutch out all the way in fifth gear, which seems like it should stall the engine, but it didn't. The engine bogged down noticeably with the clutch about half-way engaged, but after engaging the clutch all the way, the engine runs normally (when it should actually stop). So it seems the clutch is also slipping, in addition to the snap ring and sleeve issue that Chris explained. Hey Chris, I guess the next step is to remove the side door on the transmission and look for a missing snap ring? I can take a picture and post it here. Also, the clutch might be toast. I did remember to remove the clutch spacer tool, but the clutch was sitting since February 2015, to a couple months ago, with the clutch spacer in. I wonder if that weakened the spring on the pressure plate to where it doesn't really engage the flywheel. I was going to install a new clutch, but I accidentally ordered the turbo version of the Sachs kit, and the donor car for my 5-speed conversion was a non-turbo, with the smaller clutch, so I had to put the old clutch back in (I actually had already thrown it in the garbage - had to fish it out). So maybe I will also order the correct clutch kit and put that in while I'm investigating the snap ring and sleeve through the side door.
Thanks again for your help guys.
Rob
