Gearwrench Posted by Notnoel [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Best tool, The Noob Eternal ![]() ![]() |
Gearwrench is a very good brand (but there are others) and what I own. For my primary tools, I try and go with the best/better (e.g.Craftsman), especially with ratchets, because I put a lot of strain on them. For the tool collection I take on the road, I am fine with second tier stuff (e.g., Husky from Home Depot or Kobalt from Lowes). I stay far away from no-name wrenches/tools.
When I got started working on cars (in college), I had really cheap tools and it was frustrating at times (either not having the correct tool or having a low quality wrench), but I literally had no money to spare for anything. Once I had an income, I'd weigh the cost of buying the proper tools against what it'd cost for someone else to do the repair. Buying a quality tool was almost always cheaper than the cost of having a shop do the work (even on a job by job basis). Eventually you build up a quite a collection over 30-40+ years. I probably have $5,000 worth of tools, but the amount I've saved in working on my own car over the past 40 years must easily run into six figures (as a guess).
