As a former Volvo owner, I always felt the 850 a bit lacking in the quality area... early cars had various problems, including valve sticking, every 850 and S70 has ac failure that costs about $1,000 to repair - not insignificant if you view it as 10% of the purchase price of the car. As a driver's car and from a safety standpoint, I would take the 9000 any day, though I haven't seen very many really desirable Aeros in the price range you mention - all the ones I've seen have been ENORMOUS mileage - 150,000+ miles. Maintenace history is vital on any SAAB. Quasi's site has some very good 9000 information (link below). If you had to have an automatic, I would say the case for the Volvo improves. My xgf has a '98 S70 that hit an incredibly problematic spell around 45-50,000 miles, fortunately before the warranty ended. And the Volvo dealer sucked big time, my experience with the SAAB dealer was infinitely better, though many on this board have had issues with this particular SAAB dealer. Maybe the Volvo dealer is just really, really bad. I think the 850 T is a lot more fun to drive than lesser 850's, and the brakes are particularly good on all cars. The brakes on x's S70 are better than the stock brakes on my 9000 CS. To be perfectly honest, in the price range you mention, I would buy a '96 or '97 9000 CS lpt, and make a few modifications, rather than buying a 150,000 mile Aero, which is going to need more maintenance anyway. Unless you find an absolute plum Aero that has been maintained impeccable, and got new tires, brakes, shocks, exhaust, clutch relatively recently... am I rambling here? jeesh, yeah I guess I am. And ohyeah, I HAVE autocrossed my 9000... bone stock '97 CS at the time, including 195/65/15 Michelin Pilot HX's. Two things struck me - just how restrictive the stock exhaust is, and understeer. Lots and lots of understeer. I am currently seeking a decent set of 16" Aero/Super Aero wheels for it, to which I can add better tires. Hopefully I will have Konis and a complete turbo-back exhaust by SOC 2002, so I can autox there...
