I posted a number of things about a month ago (search on "transducer" or "speedo sensor") on this subject. The engine management system requires a signal from the speedo sensor to maintain an idle coming off of higher revs, such as coming to a stop at a light. If the sensor fails to deliver that signal you get the condition you describe. There are four possibilities for the failure. First, the sensor itself has failed. Second and not likely, the spiral gear on the right side output shaft of the transmission has split. Third and fairly common, the connection between the sensor and the harness has corroded or is failing to make connection for some reason. Finally, (this is what happen on mine and is fairly common on a certain 5-speed gearbox range) the speedo sensor drive gear wears out. There is a service bulletin on the latter one with the serial numbers involved (check the Townsend site for that).

To check it out, check the wiring from the sensor(sits at the bottom and rear-ward side of the gearbox by the shifter rod) and make sure everything is secure and hooked up. When I pulled mine out, I hooked an ohmmeter to the connector and gave the gear a spin to make sure I had a "make-break" signal. The sensor actually works by varying current but just seeing an "on-off" will at least show you that the sensor is basically operational. If not it can get a bit tricky as you either have a broken wire at the connector or one somewhere in the line (or the sensor is just plain bad). Some have reported that the wires break where they come out of the sensor. While you have the thing out take a look at the gear that sticks out of the sensor. If the teeth are knife-edged or if some are wiped off, that's your problem. About $10 to fix and a simple pull the old one off and new one in kind of repair. This is really the simplest fix and hopefully the one you are into. I'd consider all these easy ones first, because if the spiral gear is split, it gets ugly to the tune of a gearbox rebuild. But all the things involved would indicate that this is a fairly rare occurence.

In any event, search around on this forum and all the info you need is there.

Good Luck.
