Follow-up on mixture/lambda test results

Had my annual MOT test this morning. Last year, I reported lean mixture with lambda readings about 1.02 (limit for the test is 1.03).
A month or two ago I replaced the temperature sensor in the inlet tract, on the basis of BillJ's suggestion that it might be reporting incorrect temperatures to the ECU, leading to weak mixture. The plugs looked better straight away.
I'm glad to say my lambda reading this morning was down to 1.006, with CO of .03% and HC 9 ppm, both more or less unchanged. Mileage reading 112½K. This sensor is a very cheap and easy part to change (cheaper than a head gasket or valve repair!) and it does seem they go off with age and/or dirt/oil build-up.
