frayed wires in hatch

I have a '91 9KT. The wires that pass from the body to the hatch lid (through a flexible conduit) on the driver's side are exposed and frayed. The conduit broke, and with vibration the hard edge eventually abraded through the insulation and through some of the wires. No short-outs, but my hatch brake light doesn't work. (The demister works.)

The problem is right where the wires go into the hatch. I haven't taken the whole thing apart yet. Can someone tell me how to fix this? I am hoping there is some kind of coupling at both ends (hatch and body) rather than a continuous wire running into the hatch, but it doesn't look that way.

Also, from a preventive point of view--are there substitutes for this conduit? The passenger side is developing the same problem.
