This is an intersting discussion because it really demonstrates the manner in which people choose vehicles to express their values. Following that logic, my values must either not be discernable, or be very confused.

I pretty much like every kind of car.

I bought a 2dr explorer to use as a winter car over the winter of 2000 when we got massive snow (I have pictures where you can barely see the front of my 2 story house) and spring potholes like a moonscape. The Explorer was very good in really deep snow and lousy in packed powder. It did absorb the potholes very well, while I had to buy 2 Saab wheels and one replacement Saab snowtire.

I liked it. The car itself didn't make a whole lot of sense. But, taking it for what it was, an american truck, there was a certain difficult to define quality that was enjoyable. The biggest envirnomental hazard from that rig was the flacking rust from the rocker panels which disintegrated over the course of about 3 weeks.

I don't know that I would buy another Ford, but I have lately been thinking of a late 80's early 90's Range Rover. Since it would mean getting rid of one of my 9000's (my wife has imposed a 3 car limit - and one of the three is HERS!!!), I haven't done it. I would probably sell my non-turbo 9000 and buy a Range Rover if not for the utility of being able to swap parts between the 9000's for diagnostic purposes. Of course, I might also sell the non-turbo and buy another turbo. Who knows.

With respect to utility, my wife drives a minivan and there is nothing that compares to a minivan in that regard. I don't buy the SUV is as good as minivan mantra that I hear from people who can't bring themselves to buy a minivan. Let's face, they aren't cool and SUV's are. But, when you have a couple of young kids, you are just to damn tired to even think about trying to be cool.

And did I forget to mention that my Explorer had Firestone Wilderness AT's.

I guess I am simply a contrarian. I knew I would find a label for my values somewhere along the way.
