Are you comparing an old car to a brand new car, or an old car to a newer used car?

An old car is always going to be cheaper to maintain, than the cost of car payments on a new car. Now, where you could save some money is by simply getting another used car with relatively high mileage (over 100k) every 2-3 years. In other words, get out of the high mileage cars before they give you major problems, sell them, and buy another used car at pennies on the dollar.

I'll admit I have spent a fortune in maintenance on my 9000, FAR more than the car was worth in any 'book'. But, average it out over six years, and I still come out far ahead of new car payments on an equivalently performing/functioning car. The advantage with the new car (usually) is that you aren't going to the shop every couple months.

Now in Craig's case, he has a legitimate gripe with the lack of power, and that's one that is neither easily nor simply remedied. Anything can be done, but converting a 9000S to turbo is likely going to cost as much as buying a turbo car already in good order, unless you happen to come across a super cheap donor car.

The bottom line for me has always been - if I fix the car, does it offer everything I need, still? Since my answer has always been yes, I have my car at 275k miles with most all the mechanicals being replaced.

Just always remember, the car you have now is the devil you know, a different used car you purchase, is the devil you don't know. Who's to say what will happen a few months or years down the line? You could have a completely different problem on your newer car, that's just as costly.
