Did it just a couple of months ago on my '88. As mentioned, it helps to have skinny arms.

Disconnect the negative battery lead to avoid excitement. There is a metal clip that bolts to the intake manifold that keeps the top of the dipstick in place - remove it (and don't forget to reconnect the ground wire when you put it all back together. Take a piece of rope (I use some old fabric strapping) and CAREFULLY pull the power steering hoses and wires away from the firewall (I tie the strapping to the engine. This gives you more room. I then find a long sleeve shirt I don't ever want to wear again and put it on, followed by a rubber glove, sealed to the shirt with duct tape.

The shirt, glove, and duct tape aren't necessary, but if you don't, not only will you scrape the hell up out of your arm, you'll NEVER get the dirt and grease off (or out of the wounds).

You can then reach down between the intake manifold and the (false) firewall and unscrew the two screws holding the voltage regulator in place. No need to remove any wires. Putting the new one into place can be a little tricky, but be patient. I find having one stubby screwdriver and one long screwdriver to be helpful.
