Well I installed the plate on the firewall of my '87 today. I had some trouble bleeding the clutch and still am not persuaded that I have things together right. I sprayed everything with primer and then with rubberized underbody coating. I'm hoping that this will kee[p rust from seepage to a minimum. After talking to another fellow about the job I've decided that I probably should have cut out a section in the middle of the stiffening plate so that the master cylinder could bolt down to the original mount on the firewall. If I continue to have bleeding problems I may take the plate out and cut a hole in the middle.
The only problem with the method I used is that putting a plate in between the firewall and master means that the master has a shorter distance available for piston travel. This exacerbates the problem of small air bubbles in the line. Don at Andrew's of Princeton had the canniest suggestion... move the floor mat to increase available pedal travel. Fortunately we're taking my wife's car to the patriarch's cabin this weekend. I can think about the Saab while the Saab rests peacefully in the driveway.
