I'm researching this also as I prepare to replace my blown head gasket! I believe there is only one chain that connects the intake and exhaust camshafts, and also the intake and exhaust balance shafts. It appears the weak parts are the balance shaft sprockets, which wear more quickly than the others (the balance shafts spin at twice the speed of the camshafts). I've got the valve cover off my engine and the cam sprockets look just fine; I'll know tommorrow if the balance shaft sprokets have faired as well. The only other ring in this group I know of is on the cranckshaft and I have not heard of any weakness in this area.

Unless you're hearing a great rattling sound from the area near the timing chain, the chain is probably is OK. If there is a clatter up there, you may have a chain tensioner that has been gummed up over the miles. How does the dip-stick look? Is it coated with brown areas (which may not completely cover the entire stick?) If that's true, you may have an engine with crud built up inside that has caused the chain tensioner to stick.
