Major AC Compressor problems..HELP!!!

Just recently my ac stopped working. I had it checked and charged 3 months ago and it was working quite well. The other day it stopped blowing cold air. That same day I noticed a terrible burning smell which was coming from the pulley attached to the compressor. It also let off a little bit of smoke. I was told by the dealer that it was the belt burning because the ac compresor was not working. The dealer then said that I could disconnect the compressor, which they did, until I could afford a new one. Later that night I drove my car into the city (about 30 miles), and it seemed to be running fine with the compressor disconnected. I parked the car and headed about my business. I returned to the car later on to find that it would not start. It was trying to, but it just would not turn over. I know it is not the battery, and a different Saab mechanic said that the car will not run without a functioning compressor. Will simply replacing th compressor solve the problem, or are there other things that may need to be done. All these repairs are getting old really quickly. Any help anyone can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks
