Note: rec'd an email with similar symtoms -- posting both it and my reply, below ---
John,
I read your recent post on the 9000 Saab BB. I was surprised to see someone with very similar symptoms to the ones I have been experiencing on my '97. I get the shifter movement after the car is in gear, though, and only in 3rd and 4th gears. Several people have told me the likely cause is the transmission itself, possibly the syncromesh or linkage.
I never really considered the clutch as a possible cause, mostly because the symptoms are noticed when in gear. I wonder if your problem comes from the same root cause. It's interesting that you experience the movement in 1st and 2nd. If you look in the Townsend transmission documents relating to shift linkage, you will see the transmission uses a shifter rod for 1st and 2nd, and another shifter rod for 3rd and 4th. I hate to be pessimistic, but it just seems to be too coincidental that the symptoms come in pairs of gears in your car and in mine.
Do you get any shifter movement under hard acceleration when in gear (foot off clutch)? What gears?
Incidently, I think the responses posted under your post are off the mark. Certainly the motor mounts have nothing to do with the shifter movement.

Dave,
By shifter movement, not much -- seems normal to me. Perhaps 1/4 inch forward under hard accel in any of the first four gears, which might be motor mount flex (and why the response on the site mentioned it). But these mounts aren't bad -- I've had those on other 9000's and these are fine.
The stick definitely jumps when I start to shift, especially out of second, but not as pronounced after the trans is fully warmed up. Just curious -- does the rod for 1st/2nd sit in the highest point in the assembly? Wonder if it might be just a tiny bit low on fluid, and the starvation of the synchros is showing up with the 'pop' out of gear.
If I really carefully 'feather' or back off the throttle as I start to shift, the pop is imperceptible. But under hard accel, it's starting to bug me.
Thanks for the info -- maybe I'll post this whole thing under my first entry.
Sincerely,
John
