Well if anything it might be the opposite. I've looked at the linkage on my '97 aero but can't for the life of me remember what it looked like. But on my '86 I'm 100% sure it had the circlip because it fell off once! Drove the car about 20 minutes home w/no boost and was amazed to find the clip sitting on a frame member or something - absolutely incredible it didn't end up in the road.

If someone's messed with the linkage before, it's really easy to mistake what you're looking at. If the pin is present, the eye on the actuator rod will slide down a little and cover up the groove for the clip, making it look like there's no groove present. With the car cold (of course), try crawling underneath and push the end of the actuator rod up the pin, and see if it reveals a groove. Or do like I probably would and just ignore it until it acts up again! ;^)
