I just went through this, upgrading my 88 9000 Turbo with a 97 Aero with 38,000 miles. If you've been driving a 9000, the Aero is not better in every way, despite the hype (and the Aero name on the hatch!). The seats are wonderful, but folding down the rear ones doesn't give you the fantastic cargo area of the conventional seats. Also, rear view visibility is significantly worse than the early 9000's. My guess is that the CSE, for some, is a better bet (and cheaper, too).

As for performance, ride, gas mileage, etc., there's no comparing my 88 to the 97. The Aero is simply the most wonderful, responsive, fun large car I've ever driven.

I can write a lot about what I went through to buy my car, but I'm not sure what guidance you need. However, it seems that, in general, the core power train of these cars is usually sound (with common exceptions, like the DI cassette). But there are a lot of peripheral components (e.g. water pump, PCV) that can really add up fast, so it's good to identify these up front and negotiate price based on them.

For example, a worn tire on the Aero I bought turned out to be the result of a wheel that was bent due to a hit on the inside. That little oversight cost me $400 (I know, I could have saved money on a refinished, used wheel.). Get my drift?

To some degree too there is the question of whether you want a car with 5 years of wear and tear or a secondhand car that you rejuvenate to like-new condition. If the latter is true, you will spend money beyond the 16,000 to bring the car up to spec, and price should reflect that too.

Hope this helps.
