The description you give sounds like a wheel sensor failure. The box doesn't know there is a problem until the wheel sensors begin reporting their wheel speeds. These take the form of electric pulses generated by the teeth on the hubs passing under magnetic sensors.

You could check the sensors for continuity (i.e., wire breakages) using an ohm meter for a start. The sensors should be in the 1K ohm range, and should all be close to one another in value.

On the Mark II systems, which I think you have, you can pull error codes from the ABS using a jumper to a test plug buried in the aquarium. I think the Townsend site has some of the error codes listed.
