Having spent many years in the car business the one thing that always amazes me is how much money people piss away on cars. To get a true picture of what is going on you have to look at the TOTAL cost of owning a car. As a baseline, lets say you order a brand new engine from Saab and it costs you $4,000 installed. Sounds like the end of the world doesn't it? But let's compare the alternatives. If you trade it in you are going to get next to nothing for it--probably under $1,000, most of which is simply a discount on the car you're buying. I don't know what you have in mind for a replacement, but to improve your lot you'll probably spend $5,000 to $8,000 for a car that has 80,000 miles or so. This car will be where yours is in about three years--with all of the attendant "issues." You could buy a much newer car, but depreciation would make $4000 sound like small change. Your car however has a rebuilt transmission and if you do the engine you shouldn't have too many big problems for the next 100,000 miles. The car you own is almost always the cheap way out.
