If you think about it, the only function of either of the devices is to releive boost presure when the acceleration stops.

If the pressure had no where to escape under a high boost scenario where the throttle was released, then the pressure would go back down the intake system and back into the turbo, possibly with enough force to stop the turbo from spinning, and causing some serious dammage.

so, either the Blow off valve, or the bypass valve can accomplish this task of relieving the pressure, by re-directing it somewhere else.

They both redirect it where is cannot cause harm to the engine, but on cars with an Air mass meter, like i said ealier, if it was vented to atmosphere it would cause harm by stalling the engine...

So they do the same thing

Blow OFF valve - for cars without an Air Mass Meter

BYPASS valve - for cars WITH an Air Mass Meter


And as far as the difference in sound goes, They are very similar, and if someone was driving by while venting pressure on their turbo car, I bet that hardly anyone could guess which type of valve they are using, the sounds are that similar.
