broken spring, murdered tire, happy new year to me....

Sorry for the cross tone.
On my way to an important appointment tonight I noticed
there was a bit of snow and ice in my wheelwells, so I
knocked it out, and went upon my way, for a whole 5 miles.

The front wheels, and moreso the driver's side stayed too
noisy, and before I could pull over and check it out, it
let out a whooshing noise and the tire was flat.

Post towing, post jacking and removal of the remains, I saw
that the driver's side spring had broken, and the sharp
protruding end did me the favor of slicing up my nice
Nokian tire like a roast - gee thanks.

Questions:
It has been a long time since I did a spring compression
and/or strut replacement - any special do's or don'ts
for an 88 9KT ?

Are the springs M.Y. specific, and if so, what is the
range that will fit an '88 ?

Is there any reason that I cannot simply replace the
broken spring - all else seems intact except the tire
that was cut to ribbons.....

If I could get a whole ass'y from another car, is it
OK to just slap that in instead - or is that bad, bad,
bad ? (How about a matched, used pair ?)
