Rear speakers and crossovers

Another audio question, I search this bboard but couldn't find a def. answer...
So, I'm replacing stock rear speakers on my 1996 Saab 9000 CSE that came with premium H&K system. I bought a pair of 3-way 6x9 Infinity Kappa 693.5i speakers with 2-way external crossovers. These have two contact, one pair for the tweeter and one for the woofer. Original Saab in the rear had a 6x9 speaker and one tweeter 4(?) inches, and thus two set of wires for each.
Now, the crossover that these Kappas have takes one input and two outputs for the two leads on this 3-way speaker. So I tried hooking one of Saab's wires to this crossoover and was getting only bass (obviously), then the other and was getting only lows. So, all I'm left with is throwing out this Kappa crossover and connecting Saab leads directly to the speaker. When I connect them like this, I'm getting both highs and lows.
This kinda sucks, because I think these crossovers make all the difference, and plus just visibly, original Saab tweeters are much larger that the 3-way ones, so I'm afraid that this setup isn't optimal. What do you guys think? Is it ok to connect these wires directly to the 3-way, or the amp isn't tuned for this?
I also hear on this bboard that I should really think of changing the stock amp. But I'm trying to avoid all this mess, so I have a CD player with 25W RMS, is this OK? CD player's out goes into AMP right now, is that a good idea? Or the amp is so bad that I'm better off just bypassing it all together and driving my speaker directly?
thanks all
