this is a re posting as I forgot to put my name and the thread will expire...
Thanks everyone for all the input.
What I've done is the following...
-taken the car to a Saab dealer and my indy to test drive and diagnose the problem and they both said that the problem lies in the transmission.
-I've taken out the tranny (thanks quasi for instructions) and took it to a transmission rebuilding shop for an estimate
-the shop was unable to to open it so couldn't get an estimate. However, I found out that if any gears needed replacing, each one costs in the range of a few hundred dollars
-decided to get a "good" used one with rebuilt slave cylinder and new release bearing from Saab indy. It's from a 1994 and apparantly the '94 and newer ones are supposed to be better and more durable. AK Colin writes that the '94 won't mate to the '93 but my saab indy says it will work...
I'll try it and post all my experiences good or bad when I'm finished
