Clutch connected to the Oil Pan????

Tanya, I agree with everyone's advice regarding the oil pan repair. Shouldn't be that big a deal. I'd even try JB Weld before going the thousand dollar plus repair route. And keep cardboard under the car to monitor oil loss. Regarding your "clutch" problem. Sometimes clutch problems can produce apparent transmission problems (gear sticking is typically transmission) but usually ONLY when the release point is VERY near the floor. Typically affects reverse first (it grinds going into gear or else WON'T go in to reverse at all). Nevertheless, the oil pan shouldn't have a damn thing to do with a transmission or clutch problem - - not even oil contamination since the transmission is to the left or, rather than behind, the oil pan.

How do folk on this site feel about skipping 2nd if you're just driving the car for transportation? That's going to be an expensive repair if it's in the transmission.

If the shop mentioned a gasket, they either are not familiar with Saab (no gasket) or charge for anything plausible. If the car is only sticking in one gear, you should be able to refill the crankcase and drive it somewhere more honest and competent. The second gear skip is DEFINITELY OK for temporary use. Just run it a bit higher in first and jump to third.
