Hi board, it's me back gain. I am in the process of buying a 9000 between 95 and 98. Last week I checked out a real nice 95 CS, but the mechanic check at ABJ turned out a leaky head gasket, and the owner will not lower the price...so I have to pass on.

Anyway, today I checked out another 96 9000 CSE with 100k miles. The car was owned by the seller's grandma for 10 years and sold to him three months ago. I have the results as below, could you give me some advices on it?

The auto transmission fluid seemed clear, can be barely seen on the dip stick, it shifts firm and smooth and without much jerk or anything. The ATF fluid smells like new (I have a gallon ATF at home and compared with it). The guy said his grandma did 'winterize' the car each year and change the ATF. If that is true, it'd be ATF change every 10k miles.
The turbo gauge can get into right below the right area without being pushed too much, and the car feels strong and drives pretty good at 85mph. The guy changed oil with Mobil 1 synthetic three months ago, and there's very little leak, he said he believes his grandma also used synthetic oil. New exhaust pipe, but original DI cassett (but since I learned it can be had for $300, I am not worrying too much).
I drove the car on freeway for 15 minutes, and then let it idle for 10 minutes, temp gauge did not climb. I turned on the heater to high, and did not smell anything coolant.
The bad thing is, the coolant looked dark, and the guy said he did not know if it was changed or not. He'll find it out with his grandma. This made me worry about head gasket.
Another thing is, there's metal noise from the belt area of the engine. Being new to Saab's, I could not tell whether it's timing chain or not. What I can say is that, the metal noise sounds more like a quick, regular one that is similar to valve train noise, instead of a slow and irregular rattling one. I could not find a trusted mechanic to check as it's 50 miles from ABJ or Mecca. Anyway to tell for sure?
The guy will get all the records from his grandma. He asked for $4000, but I guess I can bargain down to maybe $3500. If there's indeed problem with head gasket and timing chain, how much would it be to change both? -- just trying to plan for the worst.
thanks in advance
