as we've had six Saabs over the years, only two purchased new, and none of them burned oil. Not even a '73 96 bought used in '83 while living in the UK.
An '80 99 used to develope a slight oil leak through the valve cover gasket [mmm, nice fumes if you let it idle in the driveway very long] but I felt that was a function of block/head gasket design. Happened after a couple of years of driving with every head gasket I ever changed, over twenty years of ownership.
1986 9kT, new = never burned a drop in 12 years.
1987 9kT, used at 95k mi = gradually dripped a little, gaskets, never burned any
1997 Aero, used at 22 k mi = doesn't burn a drop [or leak - knock on aluminum] as of 109k mi
1997 CSE, used at 122k mi = drips from several gaskets, doesn't burn anything as of 204k mi
Used Castrol GTX until the mid '80's, Mobil 1 or other full sythetics since then. Usually 7500 mi intervals.
Can't say the same thing about the US mini-vans, trucks we've owned. All "burners" of varying degree. A '96 Chrysler Town & C minivan w/ staock v-6, bought used w/ 13k mi= burned a quart per thousand the whole three and 1/2 years we drove it. Frustrating, took it to the dealer while under warranty, and they gave me the same 'it's normal/fine/within limits' answer. Hmmm. Replaced that with a new 2001 Chev Suburban, 5.3 litre V-8. Mobil 1 from day one, burns about a quart in 5k or 6k mi [hey, at least it's better than the Chrysler, I'm thinking], burns a bit more when we're towing our big old '84 Airstream travel trailer [approx 9000 #] - maybe a quart per 2k or 3k mi.
I realize this is all anecdotal - that's the fun [and part of the value] of this site. it just reinforces my feelings of design quality/engineering on Saab vs American makes.
If GM, etc, keep improving engine build quality, great. Someday they'll be where Saab was in 1980.
