During starting, the injectors open and let fuel in twice for every engine revolution. If the ECU doesn't know the engine is turning, it won't open the injectors. That could be due to a bad CPS (keeps coming back to that, doesn't it) or something keeping the injectors from working. That would keep fuel out of the cylinders. As to smelling gas, that is a bit worrysome - where are you smelling it?

I have to go back to trying to read out the fault codes. The ECU probably has a pretty good idea of what is wrong, if we only ask it.

If you hook up the switch to read out the fault codes, the LH system in your car can also perform some simple tests. This will at least tell you if the ECU and associated wiring is OK. If that all checks out, it really points to the CPS. These tests use the same test switch used for reading out the codes (see the LH section in the FAQ).

To run the tests-
Ignition OFF. Turn the test switch ON (grounds the pin).
Ignition ON, and wait for a SHORT FLASH of the Check Engine light (CEL) - IMMEDIATELY turn the switch off.
You should now hear the fuel pump run for about 1 second.

To go to test #2 (injectors), set the switch to ON
After a short flash fo the CEL, turn the switch off. A code will read out consisting of a Long flash, a series of short flashes, and then a long flash. You should hear the injectors working (clicking).

To go through the remaining tests, repeat - set the switch to ON, wait for short flash, turn the switch off. See a code, and (usually listen) for the device to operate:

Test Component Remark
1 Fuel pump Listen for pump to run for about a second
2 Injectors - Listen for injectors to run for a bit
3 IAC valve Listen for valve to open and close at 1 sec intervals
4 ELCD valve Valve on charcoal canister opens and closes at 1 second intervals.
5 EGR valve Listen for valve to buzz
6 A/C Listen for AC clutch to pull in/out
7 Auto trans Light stops flashing when shifting from N to D on tranny
8 Throttle switch Light stops flashing when pressing the throttle a little bit
9 Throttle switch Light stops flashing when flooring throttle

I've put in all the tests for completeness - you really only need to do the first two, as those are the only ones affecting starting.
