The wire that can give you trouble is the thin (usually green or yellow) wire going to the back of the alternator. It's connected to the Battery light. If that wire opens, the alternator won't start up AND the battery light will stay out. The fact that the alternator starts working, then the voltage drops and the battery light comes on tells me the wire is probably OK.

If I had to guess, I'd say you have a defective alternator, specifically a bad diode. The diode block is internal to the alternator, and not part of the voltage regulator. If one of the diodes opens up, the battery light will come on and the voltage drop down into the mid-twelves, depending on load. Most likely the diode is just fine when it's cold, but when it warms up it develops and open circuit. So the alternator checks out fine on the bench, but not after a few minutes of running. The way to check is to put an oscilloscope on the alternator output when the problem is happening. Something easy for a shop, not so easy unless you happen to have an O'scope lying around.

Without further testing, I'd say you got a bad rebuilt. It happens, and that's why there is a guarantee. I've had good luck with them, so I wouldn't be scared off. If it is indeed an open diode with a temperature problem, that would probably make it through most of the reasonable factory testing. I'd just try again.
