Rod,

First off, if you're in it for a "fun" car, get the Turbo. It's a totally different car than the N/A, and as a result it is pretty common practice to refer to it with the internal 951 designation. You get all the aero stuff, which includes front spoilers, under body air guides, a beautiful and functional rear diffuser; the strengthened transmission with hardened gears, a much, much prettier and more functional front end, and all that power. I've seen just motronic chips and an FPR yield 100hp gains! My close friend has a 1986 car with a K27/6 turbo, matching chips, lindsey boost enhancer, test pipe and R-compound tires on 255 rear width rims and keeps a little time slip of a 12.8 second quarter mile, and i wouldn't call him a fabulous driver.

I love the car; it's my 4th 944-series car (two 951s, 1988 944 S 16V, and 1987 944 N/A). If you're mechanically inclined the premium for the Turbo diminishes. Mine's a 1986 Guard's Red model with the non-M030 (M030 is very highly desirable, it's almost like the "club sport" 951/944S2) sport suspension (factory Koni adjustable), LSD, and few other options as you could tell the individual was looking for a strictly driver's car. It was a one owner with 79,000 miles when I purchased it for $6000 with a substantial exhaust leak coming from the pre-turbo exhaust (I don't know how much you know about 951 motors but the exhaust is piped under the engine to the turbo on the opposite side of the motor to reduce overall temperatures) and faded acrylic paint. I buffed the paint and purchased a used crossover pipe from ebay (I've had this pipe out three times and it is probably listed in the factory shop manual somewhere that you will inflict injury on yourself during removal and installation, heh) ($160) and I've had offers of $10k. Just hunt around for easy fixes and good deals.

Here are some pics from three years ago right after I cleaned the car up and it still had the fuchs on it...keep in mind this was had for $6000...

Shop around for one with the "Fuchs" wheels. The ones on the rear of the 951 are the same as the fronts on the 930 and are very desirable amongst that crowd for racing...I got offers of up to $2000 for just the wheels, which I ended up trading for updated 993 turbo twist style wheels of much larger width that included a $1500 set of Yokohama sport tires this year. The car looks honestly 10 years newer with them.

IF you work on the car yourself and don't mind doing some maintenance it's a great car. If you have someone else look after it you better have a lot of money...my friend has a receipt trail from the first owner from his that totals $80,000 (abnormally high, but it demonstrates the point). The high cost of parts (expect to pay $1000 for a clutch and mega man hours or $100 per brake disc) is offset when you service it yourself. It's so rewarding and a total obsession...it gets so many comments and stares because it has a sort of timeless exotic look, particularly with updated wheels, 968 spoiler and mirrors. I've made four good friends just from the car. I'm 22 so I have a need for speed, but even that aside the N/A just isn't the special car the 951 is.

I could talk all day about the car. I'd love to post my email but it won't allow it...leave another post and I'd be more than happy to answer anything I can.
