LSD is a rare option and highly desirable. My friend is in the market for a new transmission right now and he says that used, unrebuilt LSD transmissions are going for $1500 while you can sometimes find an open differential for $500 or less. Remember that it's a transaxle, so upgrading to LSD is not a simple task much like in the 9000.
I've had mine on the track and it's definitely awesome. I'd suggest the 951 because in stock form it isn't enough power to scare you, and you get way better brakes and suspension. Plus you could always buy a 944S2 and get all the 951 goodies hold the turbo. The 944S2 is about comparable to an E30 M3 on the track, though there are some additional things you need to concern yourself with such as the chain and tensioner system between the cams.
You can get a very nice 951 for $10k if you look well. Just make sure to get service records and drive a few of them first. Try to find a local owner that will let you drive his, or at least ride in it. Getting a perspective on what the car should feel like in terms of power delivery and handling could save you as much as having a good set of service records.
