wow, i'd put a used tranny in there, and hope, with all those investments, you can get $2K for the car.
i'm in a similar boat, i got about 8K in my '93 9000, i put in a brand new auto tranny i got lucky to find for $1100 in canada. my old tranny worked, but at 160+K, it was starting to slip a little shifting from reverse to auto...
it's a nice car, and they certainly aren't making anymore, but i have to say, i just bought a 2005 prius and i love it. not as much room, but same functionality/design, and i'm saving a hundred bucks a month on gas, with no noticeable depreciation factor in value of the car, at the moment.
$381 for a serp belt and some pulleys was too much, that's unfortunate. should have been $150, unless it included a new tensioner.
the clunking isn't good, my 5 spd went on my 92 9000, after whining for two years, and only worked in 1st after the clunk clunk bang.
i parted the car out.
i could have thrown in a $400 tranny and maybe it'd still be running, OR, maybe i would have blown a head gasket a month later, you just never know.
do the math, what do you spend on gas, insurance, etc., what has it cost you per year to own the car, and has it been worth it, and can you afford it, then compare it to a newer car, factor in depreciation, and what you could sell the car you'd want for in several years...
then figure your cost per year.
