My car is an automatic, btw.
I was hesitant on whether to do it or not as well. I went to a few places in Queens, NY, and none of them could even give me an estimate, even though they all advertised prices in the phone book. To me that meant they were going to take the tranny apart, then hold me up.
I also considered some on ebay- think they were new, but may have been rebuilt.
I went with the place I least expected to go with- Fred's transmissions on Kissena blvd in Queens. He said realistically it could be as much as $3k, and I wound up paying around $2500.
I became friendly with them, and felt I could trust them as much as I could ever trust a shop. The one guy there seemed to know the tranny model pretty well.
I will say though, that while the car has been running great, and has taken me up and down the east coast, I did have to bring it back 2 times in the first 6 months because it would hang up in first gear when cold. They would "fix it", then it would happen again. May have been a valve body- I can't remember. It was frustrating, but they would always fix it. I think I had a 1 year warranty, but I went back with the same issue after a year and they didnt hold me to the warrantly deadline.
At the end of the day, I have no idea what they did- I would have to check the bill, but the tranny was in bad shape. I had replaced my radiator because it had tranny fluid in it aboout a month before the tranny went. According to the shop, my tranny was rusting and had a lot of water/antifreeze in it. I can only assume that the antifreeze was leaking intio the tranny for some time, and it finally went. I ill try to pull out the bill and see what was done.
Looking back, I'm thrilled I did it because the car is phenomenal, and have not had any other repairs since, so it is as if I "bought" the car 2 1/2 years ago for $2500.
My only concern is that if the tranny did in fact go because of the tranny lines that run through the radiator for cooling, it seems to me to be a design defect, and if it happens again, the car is worthless. That is really why I'm considering getting out while the car is still in good shape.
Let me know if you have any other questions. -Chris
