As the others have noted, on top of the engine.
The ground is provided by the harness, and it should measure less than 3 ohms, when measured to a good ground, such as the engine block or the negative battery ground post. Of course, this is measured with the engine off, as the DI is disconnected.
To be totally accurate, the resistance should be a few tenths of an ohm. However, most consumer meters don't accurately measure down below a couple of ohms. So you might see 0 ohms, or 1 or 2 ohms - depends on the meter. The idea is you won't see an open circuit.
I'm new to this thread - what's the problem with the car? Also - what year is it? What engine?
As to Red vs. Black - The 'original' T5 Trionic - the 9000 from '91 to '97, and similar years for DI-equipped 900, take the Red DI. T7 uses the Black DI.
Now, many folks have successfully used a Black DI on a T5 ('red') engine. Saab doesn't recommend it. The DI is used for more than spark; it is used to detect TDC for timing, and for knock and pre-knock detection. All pretty critical stuff. So can you use a Black DI where a Red is recommended? Yes, but it's not ideal. I'd say that if the engine is running well, has no fuel or carbon issues, no vacuum leaks, and above all, hasn't been boost modified, a Black won't hurt. But if things start to go awry, I'd worry that a Black DI won't prevent knock as well on a T5 engine, and that could get very bad very quickly.
