Bill is right, you need to check the fluid level again.

The transmission has two cooling lines which look like two black hoses about 3/4" diameter running from the transmission to the passenger side of the radiator. One of these hoses connects at the bottom of the radiator, The other hose transitions into a metal pipe about 1/4" diameter that attaches at the top of the radiator.

My guess is these hose attachments are not tight enough at the radiator. If I am right, then you will find these hose parts are wet with a red smelly oil - your transmission fluid!

If so, then wipe them clean and dry at the radiator. Tighten the two 19 mm bolts where the cooling lines attach to the radiator. A firm pull with a socket wrench is tight enough. Check your transmission fluid level with the dipstick (Be careful not to let any dirt into your transmission, not even lint from a rag used to wipe the dipstick - use a lint free towel or microfiber cloth to wipe the dipstick). On level ground the fluid level should be between the minimum and maximum marks on the +40C side of the dipstick. Now start the engine, keep the transmission in Park or Neutral, let it idle a minute or two and check the cooling line connections at the radiator. They should still be clean and dry.

What probably happened is your friends realized that radiator is plastic where the cooling lines connect, and they were afraid of breaking the plastic by making the cooling line connections too tight. I made the same mistake recently when I replaced my radiator. The upper connection worked loose enough to develop a slow leak, which I discovered before the transmission showed any signs of distress.

Do not panic. The '96 automatic transmission is fairly sturdy. You have a fast leak which should be easy to find with the engine idling in Park. If the leak is not at the new radiator, then a puddle of red smelly automatic transmission fluid under the front of the car will lead you to the leak.

Please post what you find when you look for the leak.
