Thanks, I realized the wastegate typo but could't correct the post, it's a forge, and the previous owner installed it I haven't touched it, but I am pretty sure its set to higher then normal boost.
I think you may be on to something about the knocking but the oil is still making me quite suspicious. An indie saab mechanic pulled the following codes when it was doing it on him: 24660 Pre-ignition fault (knocking or pinking), 22460 Oxygen sensor (OS) or OS circuit, and 26660 unknown
For what its worth, the guy who first noticed the oil in the BPC charge port is a performance parts guy who works with a reputable saab indie and they both seemed to agree that it was an abnormal amount of oil there.
To further confuse it, the previous owner had mix and matched old spark plugs, and replaced the timing chain but off by one link which this mechanic discovered and re-did in response to a rough idle issue I was having and he put in new spark plugs at that time. He also replaced the oxygen sensor (new) along with a new 3" JT turbo back system so he was ruling out the O2 sensor code.
I will check the plugs and basics again myself but I can't imagine he put the wrong ones or gaps in and I would assume he would have caught anything obvious when he had the cover off and replaced the gasket for the timing chain.
Both these guys agree the car is quite fast, and pulling extremely well. In fact the mechanic didn't notice any problem when he first had the car until he took a longer drive, that's when he pulled the codes.
The other suspicious thing is there has been an ongoing idle hunt which originally prompted all this repair i.e the timing chain link, plugs, etc. and there was hard starting problems which turned out to be a fuel check valve. Since that repair the pressure test held so well there was no drop when left overnight. The muffler needed to be replaced anyway so thats why I went all out on the 3" turbo back, and putting a brand new O2 sensor was recommended to complement the new exhaust and rule out the O2 code.
Obviously this car was tuned and has been modified substaintailly by previous owners. It was also converted from automatic to standard. There could be many things going on. It's been well looked over by several competent mechanics so I am having trouble accepting its something basic like vacuum leaks or spark plugs.
I was going to try a different ECU to clear up the idle but the only other one I have at the moment causes the car to rev high and stall immediately.
Anyway, further theories or ideas would be greatly appreciated and in the mean time I will revisit the basics.
Thanks.
