There are lots of opinions on oil, but for a 9K it's good to remember that the original oil specs for these engines was for conventional oils. I don't have the manual handy, but I think the API spec was SJ or SL (or thereabouts). I went to synth (ACEA A3/B3) when I bought my '96 at 91K, so never thought about it.
Over the past 130K miles I have run various Mobil 1 flavors, plus a few of Castrol full synthetic, usually changing between 5,000 and 7,500, but a couple went past 8,000. It's at 221K now and for the past 70K miles has run M1 10-40 High Mileage. The car has a Stage 2 tune, uses no oil (except for a few drips) and when I did the VC gasket a year ago at 210K the top end was very clean. The oil costs between $23 and $27 for a 5 quart jug at Wally World. I use Mann or Purolator Pure One filters.
There are many more important things to worry about on these old beasts than which oil to use. IMHO, just run any ACEA A3/B3 Synth and change it every 5-7.5K.
