There are a couple things can be done to test for head gasket leak. A good repair shop should have a coolant tester that determines if there are exhaust gases in the coolant, a quick easy test. An old test for exhaust in the coolant is a bit more involved but can be done DIY. Basically it tests for exhaust gases excaping into the coolant system via a bubble test. On the 9000 the small coolant hose between the coolent reservoir and radiator is disconnected from the radiator and placed in a container of water below the water surface. With the open nipple on the radiator securely plugged, a load is applied to the warmed up engine. Any appreciable quality of bubbles from the hose indicates a head gasket leak. The engine must be warm or bubbles from the hose will occur due to thermal expansion of the coolant. A bubble every second or so is OK. With automatic transmissions, load can be applied with a converter stall, holding the brakes while applying throttle in Drive. With a manual transmission, bubbles when the engine is sharply revved is a bad sign.
