Ran out of gas. Long restart!

I knew I was on fumes but figured I could make it 2 miles to the house. EDU said I had 16 miles left, and I've had it down to about 10 once. Was too tired to drive the 5 miles to the gas station.
But no. Died at a stop sign. Called my wife and she showed up with gas. Put in a couple gallons. No start. Tried maybe 6 times, but nothing. Couldn't hear the FP kick on, so I figured it was the pump. Called AAA. Then 10 minutes later I try one more time and Vroom! All cyliinders firing. Drove home, and it started again this morning.
I have never, in 40 years, run out of gas in a fuel injected car. Have no idea if that long a start time is normal, but if the system was really drained and had to be refilled from the filter forward I guess it could take awhile.
Of course, it could be the CPS, but given that I was on fumes, out of gas seems more likely.
But I will change the filter this weekend. It's due anyway!
