If the engine briefly fires up your ignition is working and you're not getting fuel. (This is assuming ignition will fire if fuel is not flowing. Not sure if the ECM cuts off ignition under those circumstances.) I'd think it's very likely the fuel system is gunked up after sitting for so long, especially with ethanol-laced fuel.
I just went through this with a car that was sitting all winter and I just fired up recently - ran for a little bit with starting fluid and then stopped. In this case the tank was empty (non-functional fuel gauge) rather than fuel system contamination.
