FOLLOWUP - FRONT MOUNT IS IN 1 Saabers Like This Post! Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Thu, 11 Jun 2020 09:51:05 In Reply to: GOTCHA! Engine won't raise far enough to slip in new mount, JerseySaab [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 9 Jun 2020 09:47:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As it turns out, loosening the subframe is indeed the "easy" way to get the front mount in. It is not necessary to take the subframe out, just loosen it so it can be pried down a bit. With that and the engine raised the new engine mount slipped right into place, easy peasy. I used the instructions at the old quasimotors site that I referenced in another response:
https://www.saabnet.com/sites/quasimotors/mountwork.htm
It's actually pretty easy - remove the two bolts in the right front corner, remove the two nuts and bolts at the hinge point (which is in front towards the left side), and just loosen the rear subframe bolts. Then the front of the subframe can be pulled down a bit and the new mount slides right into place. Takes maybe 10-15 minutes.
I also had occasion to talk to an acquaintance who works at a former Saab dealer and asked if he had any special/pro tricks to replace the 9000's engine mounts. He confirmed that the best way to do it is to both raise the engine and loosen up the subframe to gain clearance.
Started in on the rear mount but then rain moved in (I work outside) so had to button things up for now. Will tackle that job, and the water pump that started me on this, later.
UPDATE:
I received a reminder from Scott that the quasimotors site is also hosted here at Saabnet:
