Generally speaking force in the strut is generated by spring tension and gas pressure in shock absorber (in case of gas-oil type, like here). In time springs sag, and pressure in dampers gets lower - this lowers the car. Springs also tend to break at the bottom end. Sometimes it's not visible, as only the small part disappears.
In this case, you noticed damping difference between sides, so for sure you have dampers for replacement. The wise solution is to renew the whole strut: dampers, springs together with all mounting parts. This also enables very fast McPherson replacement by removing old one and putting a new one :)
Nevertheless if you want to measure old springs you will have to disassembly the struts and measure them in no-load condition - service manual should provide reference length.
