Replacing the stock speakers is well advised, and one of the first things anyone should do when upgrading a stock system.
However, if your only complaint about the stock system is lack of bass at higher volumes, putting new speakers in will do very little to alleviate your problem. I've said it before many times, and I will say it again: you will not get good bass out of the 9000 speakers, unless you put an enclosure around them. Without it, they become what's dipole, which means they radiate sound from both the front and rear, which are out of phase, and not isolated from each other. This means that the lower frequencies will end up cancelling each other out. Cranking up the volume will do little but increase the excursion of the already limited woofer, without much increase in actual output. You have several options for good bass. The easiest in my mind is to add an amp and separate subwoofer. Less costly, but a bit more work (depending on your idea of work I guess) is to build an enclosure around the rear woofers.
See my stereo page on my web site for the complete list of what I've done in my '87 9000. I've been quite happy with the results.
Cheers!
Aaron
