Can either be a subwoofer with an amp built in (such as a Bazooka tube), or a separate box/woofer and amp combination. If separate, the amp will need to have speaker level inputs, same with a subwoofer having a built in amp. Also, you'll need a crossover on the amp. Typical ones are set at 80Hz, 12 dB/octave, though some are 18 dB/octave, and some have adjustable frequency. You'll then need to run power (from the battery), ground, and a turn on lead (this could be taken off the power antenna, or even any +12V source which is switched by the ignition). Then, you'll simply connect a wire from your rear speaker terminals, to the input of your sub amp. Voila! Instant subwoofer! This is nearly the quickest way to get one working. However, believe it or not you could actually get some subwoofer action going from deck power, though nothing very loud, simply by disconnecting your rear woofers, and putting a subwoofer on each channel instead. You'll need some pretty efficient ones, and make sure they are no less than 4 ohms. I've successfully run a subwoofer off an amp that only put out 20 watts to two channels, by the specs it was even lower than some built into head units today.
