I've heard that the Alfa is built on the same frame- it is the closest looking car to the 9000 cd I know of- and it sounds to be mechanically similar too.
I'm almost certain that if you replace this "speed controller" device with the cooling fins projecting out of it, you will have total success and be done with this project. Try Sobstory if you want a new one- otherwise there are many salvage yards that should only charge $10- $25 for the part- I was able to buy fan motor and controller for $10 in Wisconsin when I lived there- I had to take the parts out myself. Sometimes used parts are ok- the best thing is that this repair only involves unplugging the old controller and plugging in the new. It is very common that the bad motor fries the controller when it goes out. I would stick with Saab parts. Put a post in here when it's fixed. Here is the number of the salvage yard I used: 1-800-543-3667 (Don's) or try Gesch in Minnesota: 212-790-8913
They can ups things quickly.
